1880s Two-Player Cabinet Card Collection (9)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,392.00
Photographs featuring two ballplayers in the same image have been a popular art form since the earliest days of photography. "Duos" dating from before the turn of the century is the theme of this assembly of extremely rare nineteenth-century baseball images. In each of these nine cabinet photos, two ballplayers pose together in uniform. Although the names of the individuals pictured and the teams they represent will most likely forever remain a mystery, the spirit of friendship and camaraderie that they embody is timeless. These photos were collected over the course of many years by our consignor, and were selected by him both for their rich subject matter and superior aesthetics. All of the photos display fine clarity and composition and are in overall Ex-Mt condition. Each was a special find. Together they comprise a unique collection which would be difficult, if not impossible, to ever assemble again. Each of the mounts measures approximately 4.25 x 6.5 inches (two of the mounts are slightly larger, measuring 6 x 8 inches) and is in overall Ex condition. Included within this grouping is one later cabinet card that dates from approximately the turn of the century. This exceptional grouping of nineteenth-century photos, recalling memories of youth, friendship, and baseball, is the finest collection of this form of photographic art we have ever seen, let alone had the privilege of offering as a collection. Total 9 cabinet cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,392.00
