1870s to 1880s Baseball CDV and Cabinet Card Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $406.00

Collection of three early photographs (1870s to 1880s) comprised of two cabinet cards and a CDV, each picturing an unidentified nineteenth-century baseball player in uniform. All three of these photos are of exceptionally high quality, distinguished by their extraordinary images, flawless clarity and contrast, high-quality mounts, and elaborate studio settings. The earliest example is a cabinet card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) that appears to date from the 1870s and pictures a player posing in uniform. Accentuating the attractiveness of this image is the fact that he is holding both a period bat and ball, respectively, in each of his hands. The photo is so clear that the ball is easily seen to be a figure-eight variety. It is also interesting to note the player's choice of head wear, as he eschews the standard baseball cap of the time for one similar in design to a bowler. The photographer's stamp "W. J. Cady - Springfield, VT" appears on the reverse. Some light foxing is evident along the border areas and there is a small print anomaly along the left side that appears to be a product of the negative. The cabinet card has a very unusual gilded trim to the mount. Excellent condition overall. The second photograph (2.5 x 4.25 inches) is a CDV dating from the late 1870s/early 1880s, which captures a member of the "Chester" baseball club, as noted by the lettering upon his jersey. The photographer's stamp, "Wheeler - Goshen, N.Y.," is located on the reverse. Excellent condition. The final offering is a classic image dating from the 1880s. The studio cabinet card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) pictures a crisp, clear image of a player posing in uniform. The letters "SPL" appear on the front of his jersey. The photographer's credit ("Perkinson - New York & Newark") appears on both the base of the mount and the reverse. A few light corner creases do not detract in the least from the striking photographic quality of the piece and the photo itself remains in sparkling Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 3 photos. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $406.00
