Five "Black Sox" Photos Including Three by Charles Conlon
Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
Collection of five original White Sox photographs, three of which feature members of baseball's infamous "Eight Men Out." The fifth photograph features 1919 Chicago White Sox manager Kid Gleason. Four of the photos in this collection were taken by legendary baseball photographer Charles Conlon and bear his credit stamp and/or handwritten name on the reverse. The Conlon photos offered here are of Hap Felsch (6.5 x 8.5 inches), Ed Cicotte (8 x 10 inches), and Kid Gleason (7.5 x 9.5 inches), while the remaining two picture Chick Gandil (6.5 x 8.5 inches) and Buck Weaver (7.5 x 9.5 inches, "Photo by American Press Ass'n" ink stamp on reverse). All but the Cicotte photo originate from the Baseball Magazine archives and feature a hologram label on the reverse denoting their provenance. No dates are present, but the photos appear to have been taken between the years 1915 and 1919. Each of the photos displays minor condition flaws common to working press photos including minor surface creases visible when held at the proper angle, editorial markings, and/or outlining. The Weaver photo has seven small tack holes and the Kid Gleason photo has a tiny corner chip in the lower right. This is an exceptional group of five very rare, striking, and high quality original "Black Sox" related images. Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Total: 5 photos. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
