Circa 1935 Babe Ruth Signed Photograph - Inscribed To Mickey Cochrane
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $18,800.00
Offered here is one of the finest Ruth signed photos in existence, notable not only for the strength and pristine quality of the signature but also for whom it is inscribed to. This photo is personalized to Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane and was originally obtained many years ago directly from Cochrane’s estate. The 8 x 10-inch black-and-white photo captures Ruth and Cochrane together on the field and has been inscribed by Ruth in bold, blue fountain pen: “To my friend Mickey – Sincerely Babe Ruth.” The signature, which grades a perfect “10,” is absolutely flawless in its execution, with the bold blue strokes contrasting brilliantly against the white background. While the exact occasion of their meeting on the field is unknown, the photo can be conclusively dated to the mid-to-late 1930s (Cochrane only played with Detroit from 1934 through 1937). What makes the photo all the more appealing is that in a rare reversal, Cochrane is signing a ball for Ruth. The conversation between the two must have been humorous, as Ruth is grinning from ear to ear and the two gentlemen standing behind them are laughing at the exchange. This is undoubtedly one of the finest Ruth signed photos we have ever come across and it is only fitting that it came to reside in the Barry Halper Collection, for Barry’s passion for Ruth memorabilia was unparalleled in the hobby. This is a simply phenomenal piece and one that will most assuredly be the focal point of any wall upon which it is displayed. The photo has a small diagonal crease in the lower right corner, which is extremely minor and does not in the least detract from the photo’s overall Excellent to Mint appearance. Professionally matted and framed with UV-protection glass to total dimensions of 16.75 x 14.75 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $18,800.00
