1889 A35 Goodwin Round Album Near-Complete Set (8 of 9 Player Pages)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,818.75
Presented is a near-complete set of eight (out of the nine) of the 1889 Goodwin "Round Album" pages featuring ballplayers. Only the Kelly portrait page is missing for completion. (Note: The all-advertising page and the front and back covers which do not feature players and were also part of the album when issued are not included here.) The Goodwin baseball-shaped premium album was available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Old Judge Cigarettes. The reverse of each page, printed in blue, features player records and team schedules. The eight pages offered include three pages each with a single beautiful full-color portrait (Anson, Ward, and Comiskey), and five pages featuring four players each, including Hall of Famers Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe, Roger Connor, John Ward, and Jim O’Rourke in full-length poses. All eight pages appear Ex or better at a glance, and all are ideal for display. Technically, the pages grade as follows: 1-3) three pages are Excellent (all multi-player pages; with O'Rourke, Foster, and Slattery on far left, respectively); 4) the Comiskey portrait page is Vg-Ex; 5-6) two multiplayer pages are Vg (page with Mutrie has some creasing around the small binding hole and the page with Welch has creasing and a tear at the binding hole, otherwise both display as Ex); 7) Ward portrait page is Ex on the front but has a small tear on the reverse; and 8) Anson portrait page has a few pencil notations on the reverse in the form of five first names neatly written in script and is otherwise in Excellent condition. While some of these pages have minor technical flaws, all have outstanding eye-appeal, and are crisp and clean. The Goodwin “Round Album,” as it has always been known to collectors, is one of the most substantial and beautiful of all nineteenth-century baseball items, and is by far the most desirable of all tobacco albums. Even though this album is not complete, individual Round Album pages are highly prized by collectors and frequently trade. It is certain that, with a little patience, a dedicated collector can locate the missing page to complete this album. Total 8 player pages. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
