1948 The Pittsburgh Pirates Signed by Honus Wagner
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,175.00
Hard-bound first edition of The Pittsburgh Pirates by Fred Lieb (G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1948), signed on the front flyleaf by Honus Wagner. Wagner's signature has been beautifully penned in blue ink and grades "10." The blue-ink signature ("10") of former Pirates shortstop Stan Rojek also appears on the front flyleaf, directly below that of Wagner. This book was one in a series of popular baseball team histories published by Putnam over the years. The famed "Flying Dutchman," who was an active coach with the Pirates in 1948, was certainly mentioned more than once in this work, as he was undoubtedly the greatest player in franchise history. That status is affirmed by the inclusion of his photo opposite the title page of the book. Wagner passed away in 1955, just seven years after the book's publication. The 299-page illustrated book (6 x 8.25 inches) displays extremely light foxing along the top of the end pages; however, all of the interior pages are clean and bright. A few light stains are evident on both the front and back covers. Very Good to Excellent condition. Accompanied by its original dust jacket (Vg-Ex). A scarce Wagner signed item and one that should appeal to both baseball and book collectors alike. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
