Two Mickey Mantle Signed 1951 Replica Jerseys
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $5,287.50
These unique replica jerseys were created with vintage materials in order to more accurately commemorate Mickey Mantle’s 1951 rookie season. Each was later signed by Mickey Mantle in the collar as a favor for Barry Halper. In 1951 Mickey Mantle started the season with the Yankees, at which time he wore number “6.” After struggling early, he was sent back down to the minor leagues to play with the Kansas City Blues. Upon his return to the majors that year, he was issued his now famous number “7,” which he wore for the remainder of his career. These two offered garments, one a Yankees jersey and the other a Kansas City jersey, would never fool an expert anymore than a modern-day replica would, nor were they intended to. However, at a glance they look, respectively, very much like an authentic Mickey Mantle 1951 New York Yankees road jersey and a 1951 Kansas City road jersey. It should be emphasized that these replica jerseys are much different in composition than the many Mitchell & Ness replica jerseys commonly seen in the hobby. Mitchell & Ness jerseys are produced using modern-day materials. These garments were created using vintage flannel jerseys from the period as a foundation, thus giving them the true look and feel of 1950s style jerseys. The lettering, numerals, and stitching in the collar too were carefully applied to mimic those used on actual Yankee jerseys. The first was made to replicate Mantle’s original number “6” jersey. The gray, road flannel jersey is lettered "New York" across the chest and features the number "6" on the reverse. All of the letters and numerals are crafted in navy blue felt and match the design of the period. An authentic American League “Golden Anniversary” patch adorns the left sleeve. Located in the collar are a vintage "Spalding" tag, a “44” size tag and a laundry tag. Signed “Mickey Mantle” in blue Sharpie (“7/8”) in the collar. The jersey displays no wear. The second garment was made to resemble Mantle’s 1951 Kansas City Blues jersey. The gray, road flannel jersey is lettered "Kansas City" across the chest and features the number "23" on the reverse. All of the letters and numerals are crafted in navy blue felt and match the design of the period. A vintage “Wilson” label and adjacent “44” size tag are both located in the left front tail. A “51” year tag is situated in the collar. Inscribed “To Barry – Best Wishes – Mickey Mantle” in blue Sharpie (“9”) in the collar. The jersey displays excessive wear including tears, repaired tears, and light staining. These are both unique Mickey Mantle signed pieces. The display quality of them is far superior to that of modern-day replicas and their vintage nature makes them potentially very desirable for those collectors who normally shun modern, mass-produced, Mickey Mantle signed pieces. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
