1955 New York Yankees Team-Signed Bob Wiesler World Series Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,232.50

Barry Halper’s love of the Yankees was no secret, so it’s no surprise that his collection was heavily weighted towards items casting a shadow of pinstripes. Offered here is one of the more spectacular New York Yankees signed pieces remaining in his collection: a 1955 World Series pro model bat, issued to Yankees pitcher Bob Wiesler by H&B specifically for use in the World Series, signed by thirty-two members of the 1955 club. The provenance of the bat is further supported by an accompanying LOA from Bob Wiesler, in which he attests to its authenticity. The signatures appearing on the bat are those of Mantle, Stengel (Mgr.), Wiesler, Rizzuto, Dickey (coach), Ford, Berra, Carey, Bauer, Noren, McDougald, Howard, Martin, Leja, Turley, Sturdivant, Byrne, Carroll, Morgan, Kucks, Skowron, Cerv, Coleman, Larsen, Grim, Collins, Robinson, Konstanty, Turner (coach), Blanchard, Crosetti (coach), and Silvera. All of the signatures appear on the side of the bat above the barrel stamping with the exception of Wiesler’s, which appears directly below the stamping. Prior to the bat having been signed, the signature panel was lightly sanded to provide a more suitable writing surface. That preparation was not only prudent, but necessary, for the original finished surface is not conducive to writing. That fact is evident when viewing both the McDougald and Berra signatures, half of which extend over the boundary of the sanded area. The portions penned on the sanded surface for each signature are very legible; however, the other half of each of these two signatures is barely visible. Aside from those two, the remaining signatures are all quite uniform in strength, grading “8/9.” The autographs notwithstanding, the bat itself is a significant and desirable collectible. Normally, each player only received two specially produced bats for use in the World Series. The offered example is an H&B model K55 bat and features the name “Wiesler” stamped on the barrel in block lettering. “World Series 1955” and “New York Yankees” are stamped, respectively, above and below Wiesler’s name on the barrel, also in block lettering. The bat displays no use. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 34 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,232.50
