1969 and 1970 Harmon Killebrew The Sporting News American League Player of the Year Awards (2)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $12,925.00

In 1948 The Sporting News began the practice of issuing Player of the Year Awards for each respective league. In many ways the award was more prestigious than that of the League MVP Award in that unlike the MVP Award, it was based solely on the player's performance on the field and not linked to his team's success. Offered here are not one but two The Sporting News Player of the Year Awards, both issued to Harmon Killebrew in 1969 and 1970, respectively. These awards, which were designed to be hung on the wall, are each comprised of a black wooden base (12.25 x 15 inches) upon which is an affixed metal plate bearing the engraved portrait image of Killebrew. A metal plaque above his image denotes the the name of the award and a similar plaque below features Killebrew's name and a synopsis of his season. As noted in the text of the 1970 plaque, Killebrew was only the second American League player to ever win The Sporting News Player of the Year Award in two consecutive seasons. The awards are accompanied by a photocopy of a photograph picturing Killebrew accepting the 1970 award. Killebrew certainly deserved the honor in each of those two seasons. The Hall of Fame slugger batted .276 with a league-leading 49 home runs and 140 RBI in 1969. He followed up that banner year by batting .271 with 41 home runs and 113 RBI in 1970. Today, his career total of 573 home runs ranks eighth on the all-time list. Each award displays light wear in the form of minor edge scuffs and is otherwise in Excellent condition. In the late 1980s Barry Halper purchased most of Harman Killebrew's personal collection of memorabilia directly from Killebrew. Barry kept these two awards as very special souvenirs of his good friend's extraordinary career, as they were ideal for display and commemorated Killebrew's most dominating and celebrated seasons. The Sporting News Player of the Year Awards rarely come up for sale or auction, let alone for a player of Harman Killebrew's great stature. From the Barry Halper Collection. Total: 2 awards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $12,925.00
