1977 Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson and Roy White Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,997.50

Only Barry Halper could find a photo picturing Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson posing together (with Roy White as well) and then later manage to have it signed by each player. If the improbability of the image weren't enough, the inscription alone would make this an exceptional Yankees signed piece dating from the era of New York's fabled "Bronx Zoo." Both Munson and White have simply signed the photo in the area of their respective images. Jackson, however, has personalized the piece to Barry: "To my friend Barry - I wish you were majority - Reggie Jackson." Barry Halper was a minority owner with the New York Yankees and Jackson's remark was a sly dig at the team's majority owner, George Steinbrenner, with whom Jackson had many off-the-field battles. It is not known when or where this photo was taken, but it must have been very shortly after Jackson signed with the club in 1977. That spring, a well-publicized article about Jackson in Sports Illustrated created a rift between Munson and Jackson that never healed. When, for the article, Jackson was asked about the Yankees captain he replied, "He thinks he's the straw that stirs the drink, but he can only stir it bad." After that article came out, Munson hardly ever spoke to Jackson again. In this photo Jackson is the only player wearing a cap and it's possible that it may have been taken at a press conference to announce his signing and introduce him to other members of the team. Certainly this is one of the few photos to capture Munson and Jackson smiling together for the camera. Both Jackson's inscription and White's signature have been penned in blue Sharpie and grade "10." Munson's signature, scripted in black marker, grades "8." The large-format black-and-white photograph (14 x 10 inches) is in Excellent condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 18.75 x 15 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,997.50
