1978 Thurman Munson Signed Autobiography
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $3,818.75
Hardcover first edition of Thurman Munson by Thurman Munson with Marty Appel (Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, Inc., New York, 1978), signed by Munson on the front flyleaf. Munson's signature has been boldly scripted in blue ink and grades a perfect "10." Munson was never known as a prolific signer during his playing career and normally shunned the attention of the fans. That fact, combined with his untimely death in 1979 at the age of thirty-two, has resulted in the scarcity of Munson-signed items today. Interestingly, in his book Munson attempts to explain why he was a reluctant signer: Take autographs, for example. There was something that I could never understand. Even today, I can’t see why somebody couldn’t just shake your hand and say hello. The autograph, I know, serves as proof that you really met so-and-so, and in New York, the kids probably do a big business selling them, but to me, they just don’t have much meaning. Luckily for collectors today Munson resisted his natural inclination and took the time to sign this copy, one of the very few he ever signed, thus creating both a rare and extremely desirable addition to any substantial Yankee or signed baseball book collection. The 199-page book (6 x 9 inches) is in Excellent to Mint condition and includes the original dust jacket (Ex). From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600+. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
