Lou Gehrig Perez-Steele Hall of Fame Postcard Original Artwork

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $9,400.00

Original watercolor-on-board painting of Lou Gehrig created by Dick Perez for the Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcard set. Signed by the artist in the middle left. This original artwork is from the very first Perez-Steele postcard series published in 1980. The 1980 Hall of Fame postcard set was the first Perez-Steele art card set ever produced, and is universally recognized as the landmark Perez-Steele card issue. Publishing of the set began in 1980 and was then updated every few years, through 2001, to add new inductees. When Perez-Steele Galleries first decided to privately sell the first series Perez-Steele postcard original artworks, everyone wanted Ruth and Gehrig. Frank Steele decided to remedy the situation by offering to the original artworks of the greatest Yankee legends to the most legendary of all Yankee collectors, Barry Halper. Barry purchased this artwork directly from Frank Steele in 1981. It remained on his living-room wall, alongside Ruth and three Yankee managers, for twenty-five years. The painting measures 9 x 13.75 inches and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 18 x 23 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $9,400.00
