1981 Nolan Ryan Signed and Inscribed Game Ball From His 5th No-Hitter
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,880.00
This official National League (Feeney) ball was used in Nolan Ryan's fifth no-hitter and is inscribed by Ryan to Barry Halper in affirmation of its provenance. Ryan's fifth no-hitter took place at the Houston Astrodome on September 26, 1981. Pitching for the Astros, Ryan blanked the Dodgers 5-0 and in doing so became the first pitcher in baseball history to pitch five no-hitters (he eventually finished his career with seven). Ryan has inscribed the ball in black ink on a side panel "To Barry - This ball was used in my 5th No-Hitter - 9/21/81." He has signed the ball in black ink on the opposite side panel. The inscription is somewhat light, but clearly legible, and grades "4." The signature is somewhat bolder, grading "6." Interestingly, Ryan made an error in dating the ball, writing September 21st as opposed to September 26th. Regardless of that honest mistake on Ryan's part, this remains a significant game ball from one of the most momentous pitching feats in baseball history and, most important, one that is personally documented by Nolan Ryan. The ball displays appropriate game use in the form of moderate soiling and the signed panels have been coated with a light layer of protective shellac. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,880.00
