Personalized Collection of Single-Signed Balls Inscribed "To Barry Halper" Including 43 Hall of Famers! (71)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,581.25
Barry Halper was not just the world's greatest baseball collector but also one of the best loved and respected people in the hobby. That fact is evidenced by the respect and admiration bestowed upon him by so many of the players themselves. Offered here are the tangible reminders of the many friendships he formed with the ballplayers in the form of seventy-one single-singed baseballs, each personally inscribed "To Barry." While twenty-two of the balls are simply inscribed "To Barry," the other forty-nine balls all bear more lengthy sentiments from the players. Many of the inscriptions make note of his legendary collection; others simply offer kind words. Unless otherwise noted, all of the balls are either official American or National League balls that date from the 1980s or 1990s. Ten of the balls are "portrait" balls on which Barry has had the player's portrait professionally painted on a side panel. The vast majority of the balls display varying degrees of age toning, while approximately twenty-five percent have been coated with a light layer of protective shellac. Twenty-five of the balls have been signed in fine-point marker; the remainder have been signed in either blue or black ink. Signatures range in grade from "5" to "10," averaging "8/9." Sixty-two different players are represented in the collection, including forty-three Hall of Famers, with one ball bearing the inscription of two players. The prominence of the players that have signed these balls for Barry Halper makes all of them highlights, but special note is made of two balls personalized and signed by Joe DiMaggio and two balls signed and personalized by Ted Williams. The players represented here (with the number of balls signed by each player, if more than one, noted in parenthesis) are Hank Aaron, Sparky Anderson, Luke Appling, Early Averill, Len Barker, Wade Boggs (2), Ralph Branca, Lou Boudreau, Gary Carter (2), Happy Chandler, Jocko Conlan, Joe Cronin, Ron Davis, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio (2), Dwight Evans, Bob Feller, Carlton Fisk, Bob Gibson, Dwight Gooden, Ron Guidry, Buddy Hassett, Billy Herman, Reggie Jackson (3), Travis Jackson, Fergie Jenkins, Judy Johnson (2), George Kell, Ron Kittle, Sandy Koufax, Buck Leonard, Al Lopez, Fred Lynn, Willie Mays, Johnny Mize, Bobby Murcer, Joe Niekro, Gaylord Perry, Willie Randolph, Cal Ripken Jr. (2), Phil Rizzuto, Robin Roberts, Brooks Robinson, Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, Joe Sewell, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, Dave Stieb, Don Sutton, Bill Terry, Allen Trammell, Early Weaver, David Wells (on a MLB souvenir ball), Bill White, Hoyt Wilhelm, Billy Williams, Ted Williams (2), Early Wynn (2), and Carl Yastrzemski (2). The final ball in the collection has been signed by both Lou Brock ("To Barry No. 1 collector from No. 1 thief - Your pal Lou Brock") and Rickey Henderson ("Hey Barry - I'm No. 1 Lou is No. 2 - Your Pal Rickey Henderson"). From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 71 balls. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,581.25
