Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio Signed Plate Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,112.50

Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio collector plates are fairly common in the hobby; however, signed examples are rare. They are, after all, not the kind of item one normally carries around for signing. This collection of five signed plates is highlighted by two rare dinner plates from Mickey Mantle's "Country Cookin'" restaurant, each of which features a "salty" inscription by Mantle to Barry Halper on the front. The first is inscribed in blue Sharpie ("10"): "To Get a better piece of chicken you'd have to be a rooster - Mickey Mantle." The second plate is inscribed in blue marker ("8"): "Barry - Fill this up with S_ _ _ and eat it - Mickey Mantle." These plates (9.5 inches in diameter) originate from Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn restaurant in Joplin, Missouri. Signed examples are rare and probably only Barry Halper possessed plates inscribed in precisely this unusual manner. Each plate is in Excellent condition, and the pair make for a unique Mantle signed display (but not for the kid's room). The remaining three pieces are comprised of limited-edition collector's plates commemorating the careers of Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio, respectively. The first, titled "Mickey," is numbered "2685/11,000" and was issued by Marigold Collector Plates in 1983. The plate (10 inches in diameter) is inscribed in blue marker ("9"): "To Barry - Thanks for being a great friend - Mickey Mantle." The second plate, titled "The Life of a Legend - Mickey Mantle," is oblong (12.5 x 9.5 inches) and was issued in 1990 by Sports Impressions (numbered "417/1,968"). It is inscribed in blue marker ("10"): "To Barry - Thank You - Mickey Mantle 1/10/91." The final plate (8.25 inches in diameter), issued in 1993 by The Bradford Exchange, is titled "Joe DiMaggio: The Streak." DiMaggio has inscribed the plate in silver Sharpie ("10"): To my dear friend Barry - Get Well! - Joe DiMaggio." It is numbered "2003" on the reverse. Each of the ceramic collector plates is in Near Mint condition. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 5 plates. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
