1998 Mariano Rivera New York Yankees Signed Game-Used Hats (2)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,292.50

Each of these two New York Yankee pro model caps was worn by reliever Mariano Rivera in 1998 and is accompanied by two separate signed LOAs (each on Steiner Collectibles letterhead) signed by Rivera. Both navy blue caps feature a white "NY" logo on the front and have been signed by Rivera in silver Sharpie ("7") on the top side of the brim. The caps are virtually identical with the exception of the notations written on the underside of the brim. The first features Rivera's uniform number ("42") written in black marker above his blue marker signature ("9"). The second cap bears the black marker notation (presumably in Rivera's hand), "Dios te Bendiga - #42" (loosely translated as "God Blesses you"). A slight smudging of blue marker appears beneath the uniform number. Each cap features a New Era manufacturing label along the headband, as well as a size tag and Diamond Collection label. Both caps display moderate to heavy wear, including soiling to the headbands. These caps were obtained by Barry Halper directly from Rivera's marketing agent in either late 1998 or early 1999. Even at that early stage of Rivera's career Barry sensed that the Dominican-born reliever was destined for stardom. For that reason he purposely refrained from selling these caps during the initial offering of his collection in the fall of 1999, preferring to keep them for luck and as a reminder of his assessment of Rivera's bright future. His foresight proved correct, as Rivera is today considered by many to be the greatest reliever in baseball history. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
