1899-1900 M101-1 The Sporting News Collection (18) Including Honus Wagner Rookie
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $9,400.00
Collection of eighteen different M101-1 Sporting News supplements (five from 1899 and thirteen from 1900): Honus Wagner (HOF), Criger, Donahue, Ned Hanlon (HOF), Frank Chance (HOF), Williams, Peitz, Phillipe, Hahn, Leever, Dahlen, Scott, Breitenstein, Tannehill, Jones, Callahan, Ritchey, and Thomas. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with The Sporting News between the years 1899 and 1900. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This lot is highlighted by Honus Wagner, the key to the M101-1 set. The Wagner premium was issued on August 19, 1899 and features the future Hall of Fame legend as a third baseman with the Louisville Colonels. Wagner has a very light water stain along the right and bottom edge and some light creasing. The pencil notation "28" is written in the lower left corner. While technically in Good condition, the condition flaws are minor and the premium has a much stronger appearance. The seventeen remaining premiums share the same flaws as the Wagner, but overall these extremely rare supplements are visually very pleasing despite their technical flaws. Not all collectors recognize premiums as cards due to their size and thin stock, but for those that do not make this distinction, the M101-1 Sporting News premiums of Honus Wagner and Frank Chance are each the earliest issues for these significant Hall of Famers and represent their rookie cards. Dimensions: each approximately 8.75 x 11 inches. Total: 18 supplements. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $9,400.00
