Circa 1910 P2 Sweet Caporal Pins Near-Complete Set (203 of 205)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,406.25
35% range from Ex to Ex-Mt, 35% Vg-Ex, 30% Good. Most have the original advertising back papers complete and intact. This near-complete set of 1910 P2 Sweet Caporal pins is comprised of 203 of the 205 pins in the set. The two pins missing for completion are one of the two Cobbs (large letters) and Mullen (large letters). The P2 Sweet Caporal pin set is one of the most interesting, substantial, and most overlooked of all baseball tobacco inserts. This classic 1910-era issue includes almost all of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the era, many appearing in the set twice, including Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. The players in this set are also found in T205 and T206. Assembling a complete set of P2s is more challenging than many collectors realize due to the many scarce pins and numerous variations. There are 153 pins with “small letters” and 52 “large letters” in a complete set. After the most common fifty or sixty pins (which are by far most frequently seen) they start to get scarce. Many of the Hall of Famers in the set are represented by both a "large letter" (photo style) variety and a "small letter" (artwork style) variety. This set is loaded with Hall of Famers and rarities. It is hard not to appreciate the value represented by P2s compared to tobacco-card issues of the era, though the recent introduction of pin grading may generate more well-deserved collector interest in the future. This is a very pleasing mixed-grade set ranging in condition from Good to Ex-Mt. The many Hall of Famers and scarce pins have the same condition distribution as the overall set composite. Total 203 pins (of the 205 in the set). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
