1895 Baltimore Orioles Team-Composite Base Ball and Race Gazette Display
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,057.50
This rare large-format display piece, picturing bust-length photos of nineteen members of the 1895 National League pennant-winning Baltimore Orioles, was issued as a supplement to The Official Base Ball and Race Gazette , as noted in print along the lower left corner. Despite their reputation for "rough and tumble" play on the ball field, the team projects a more genteel manner here, as each player is pictured in formal attire, including a white boutonniere on the left lapel. Manager Ned Hanlon's photo is prominently pictured in the center, surrounded by those of John McGraw, "Wee Willie" Keeler, Wilbert Robinson, Hughie Jennings, Joe Kelley, Dan Brouthers, and "Kid" Gleason. Baltimore won its second consecutive National League pennant in 1895, but once again lost in the Temple Cup series, where they were defeated by second-place Cleveland. We have never seen this rare display piece before. There are very few pieces ideal for framing dating from the 1890s, let alone featuring the Orioles, the most dominant team of the era. The piece (15 x 19.5 inches) displays a few small edge tears, minor staining along the bottom border, light toning, and an area of dark discoloration along the left border. While technically in Very Good condition, it should be noted that most of the flaws can be matted out, leaving a central image area that projects as Excellent. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
