Circa 1920 Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh Baseball Advertising Displays (2)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $940.00

Extraordinarily rare and striking pair of baseball-theme "trolley" or "subway" advertising signs issued to promote American Pale Export Beer. Each advertising display features a generic illustration of a ballplayer along with a baseball catchphrase and the name of the product. The name of the brewery, "Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh," appears along the base. While not known for certain, the fact that there is more than one design suggests that these rare pieces may be two of what was originally an even larger series of similar advertising displays issued by the company at the time, although these are the only two examples we have ever seen or heard of. The Independent Brewing Co. of Pittsburgh was in operation from 1905 through 1933; however, the design of the displays (along with the uniform style depicted) strongly suggest that they date from earlier rather than later in the company's history. Both of the advertising pieces have an Excellent to Mint appearance; however, close examination of the one featuring the catcher reveals a long vertical crease extending from border to border on the right side. The crease (which may have benefited from professional restoration) is quite unobtrusive and is only readily visible when viewed at certain angles. These are extremely rare and stunning. Each display measures 20.25 x 10 inches and has been identically framed to slightly larger dimensions. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $940.00
