1931 George Kelly "Tour of Japan" Game-Used Pants
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,880.00
Pair of flannel pants worn by Hall of Fame first baseman George "Highpockets" Kelly during the 1931 "Tour of Japan." These pants originated years ago directly from Kelly's estate and were originally accompanied by the matching 1931 "Tour of Japan" jersey top as well. Following the 1931 World Series, Kelly, along with thirteen other Major League players, including Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, and Frankie Frisch, traveled to Japan and Honolulu for a series of exhibition games against local clubs. The U.S. "All-Stars" won all eighteen games on the tour, seventeen against Japanese teams and one against the Hawaii All-Stars. The success of the tour led to a second, more heralded tour, led by Babe Ruth, in 1934. The white flannel pinstriped pants feature a button fly and red-and-blue piping along the side of each leg. The name "Kelly" is chain-stitched in red in the waistband. Also located in the waistband is a "Spalding" label. The bottom of each pant leg has been slightly cut; otherwise the pants are completely original with no other alterations. Heavy wear is displayed throughout including a number of small holes and tears. Kelly was one of the key members of the New York Giants 1921-1923 baseball dynasty, helping to lead the club to three pennants and two World Championships during that span. Kelly twice led the league in RBI and once in home runs. He finished his career with a .297 lifetime average, 148 home runs, and 1,020 RBI. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. A rare Hall of Fame game-worn garment, one of only a few in existence dating to the famous 1931 "Tour of Japan." LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,880.00
