Circa 1977-79 Bob Watson Houston Astros Game-Used Knit Jersey
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $705.00
This Houston Astros home/road jersey was worn by Bob Watson circa 1977 to 1979, and has been graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. The rainbow color knit jersey, which was used by the club both at home and on the road, is lettered “Astros” on the front and features a blue star on the left breast. The number “27” appears on the reverse, above which is the name “Watson.” The front lettering is silk-screened in blue. All reverse letters are appliquéd in blue tackle twill upon a white nameplate. The numerals are appliquéd in blue on white tackle twill. A “Medalist/Sandknit 46” label appears on the left front tail, adjacent to which is a Medalist/Sandknit exclusivity label that reads “Designed and tailored exclusively for the Houston Astros National League.” The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear throughout. The dating of this jersey is based upon the number style on the reverse combined with the tag design and Watson’s tenure with the Astros. Bob Watson spent the first fourteen years of his Major League career with the Astros (1966-79), during which time he was one of their most consistent hitters. Watson batted over .300 on four separate occasions and appeared in two All-Star Games over that span. In 1979 he was traded in midseason to the Red Sox and later played with both the Yankees and Braves. In 1975 Watson gained fame for scoring baseball’s one-millionth run and he also holds the distinction of being the only player to hit for the cycle in both leagues. In 1993 he broke one of baseball’s long-standing barriers by becoming the first African-American general manager in Major League history. Fittingly, he accepted that position with his former club, the Astros. Graded A10 by MEARS. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $705.00
