2006 Hideki Matsui New York Yankees Game-Used Road Jersey (Steiner)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,525.00

New York Yankees road jersey worn by outfielder Hideki Matsui in 2006. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. This jersey originates directly from Yankees-Steiner Collectibles, the official collectibles company of the New York Yankees, which exclusively markets all authentic game-used Yankees jerseys, and is accompanied by an LOA from the company attesting to its game-used status. The gray knit jersey is lettered "New York" across the front and features the number "55" on the reverse. All letters and numerals have been appliquéd in navy on white tackle twill. Located on the left front tail are a "Majestic Athletic" label, a badly faded "2006" year tag, and a flag tag bearing the size, "50." A Major League Baseball patch appears on the rear collar. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays light wear throughout. In the winter of 2002 New Yorkers were surprised to learn that Godzilla was headed to New York. While many fled the city in panic, Yankee fans were ecstatic, for it meant that Japanese star outfielder Hideki Matsui had signed on with the "Bronx Bombers" for the 2003 season. Matsui proved to be as good as advertised. "Godzilla" drove in over 100 runs in each of his first three seasons while averaging twenty-three home runs per year. In 2006 Matsui suffered a number of injuries that caused him to miss a substantial portion of the season. Despite appearing in just fifty-nine games, he still managed to hit eight home runs and drive in twenty-nine runs. Graded A10 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 5 points for provenance). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and also from Yankees-Steiner Collectibles attesting to its authenticity and game-used provenance. This is one of only three Hideki Matsui jerseys listed in the MEARS census and the highest-graded example by far (the other two are graded, respectively, A4 and A5). Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,525.00
