2006 Mariano Rivera New York Yankees Game-Used Road Jersey (Steiner)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,406.25
New York Yankees road jersey worn by perennial All-Star reliever Mariano Rivera in 2006. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. This jersey originates directly from Yankees-Steiner Collectibles, the official collectibles company of the New York Yankees, which exclusively markets all authentic game-used Yankees jerseys, and is accompanied by an LOA from the company attesting to its game-used status. The gray knit jersey is lettered "New York" across the front and features the number "42" on the reverse. All letters and numerals have been appliquéd in navy on white tackle twill. Located on the left front tail are a "Majestic Athletic" label, a badly faded "2006" year tag, and a flag tag bearing the size, "46." A Major League Baseball patch appears on the rear collar. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays light wear throughout. Few relievers in history have compiled a more impressive Hall of Fame resume than Mariano Rivera. The Yankees celebrated "closer" is currently fourth on the all-time save list with 413 and his 2.29 career ERA is better than that of any of the four relievers currently enshrined in Cooperstown. Despite those gaudy numbers, it is Rivera's postseason record that has truly defined his career. Rivera has appeared in five World Series and is the current leader in World Series saves with nine, three ahead of Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers. In the modern era of extended postseason contests Rivera has no equal. His thirty-four saves is the all-time best and is more than double the total of the man who occupies the number two ranking on the list, Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley. The year 2006 proved to be typical for Rivera, as he recorded thirty-four saves and posted a 1.80 ERA. Graded A10 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 5 points for provenance). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and also from Yankees-Steiner Collectibles attesting to its authenticity and game-used provenance. All authentic game-used modern-era Yankee jerseys originate directly from Steiner. This is one of only two Mariano Rivera jerseys listed in the MEARS census and the highest-graded example by far (the other, a 1997 Yankees road jersey, is graded A5). Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
