LOT WITHDRAWN - 1977 Notre Dame Football National Championship Ring

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For -

Please note: This lot has been withdrawn from the auction due to an issue relating to title.

This ring commemorates the Notre Dame football team's 1977 National Championship season. This particular ring was issued to either a staff or administrative member of the team, as opposed to a player, but is an official team-issued Championship ring. Notre Dame finished the regular season with a 10-1 record and met number-one ranked Texas in the Cotton Bowl on January 2, 1978. The "Fighting Irish" easily defeated the "Longhorns" that day by a score of 38-10. The following day they emerged as the number-one team in the final AP poll, thereby earning their seventh National Championship in the forty-two years of the AP poll. The 10K gold ring, designed by Balfour, features a black stone on the front displaying the gold letters "ND." The phrase "National Champions" surrounds the stone in raised-relief letters. The left shank displays an image of the school's leprechaun mascot, above which is lettered "1977 Cotton Bowl," and below, "Fightin' Irish." A banner surrounding the mascot displays the score of the Cotton Bowl game, "Notre Dame 38 - Texas 10." The right shank features an image of the cupola of the campus chapel and a football. Above the image is the name of the recipient, "Ward." (No player by that name is listed on the roster for Notre Dame in 1977.) In Near Mint condition. Size: Approximately 10.25. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR
