1950 Topps Football Felt Backs Collection (51)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

A very significant collection of fifty-one cards (of the 100 in the set) from the first major football card series ever issued by Topps, highlighted by Hall of Famers Leo Nomellini and Doak Walker. These unusual cards, honoring college football stars, were issued a year prior to Topps’ Connie Mack All Stars and Current All Stars, as well as the 1951 Topps Red and Blue Back baseball sets. The cards measure 7/8 x 1-7/16 inches with a portrait image set against a colored background (blue, red, green, brown, or yellow), and with the back of each card featuring a felt pennant representing the player’s school. We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Seventeen cards grade Ex-Mt: Boldin (yellow), Carey (PSA EX-MT 6), Conn, W. Davis, Friedland, Hagan, Jensen (yellow, PSA EX-MT 6), Lee (yellow, PSA EX-MT 6), Martin (yellow), Nagel (yellow), Perini (yellow), Rogel, Stalloni (yellow), Teninga (yellow), Ulinski, Ward, and Wilson; twelve cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex: Allen, Bell, Creekmur RC, Dooney, Hart (yellow, PSA EX 5), Hughes, Malekoff (yellow), Mouser (PSA EX 5), Nomellini (HOF, PSA VG-EX 4), Stautner RC (HOF, PSA EX 5), Tonnemaker, and Towler RC (yellow); twenty-one grade Vg: Chauncey, Cox, Davis RC, Gilman, Gregus, Hall, Jackson, Krueger, Kuhn, F. Miller, Murphy, Pavich, Rakestraw, Shaw (yellow), Sitko RC (yellow), Strickland, Turek (yellow), Walker (HOF, yellow), Weiss, Williams, and Wren. This is a very significant and scarce early Topps issue, which has always been somewhat overlooked by collectors, perhaps because of their unusual dimensions. The SMR value for just seven of the graded cards (not including the VG-EX 4 of Nomellini and the forty-four ungraded cards) is $920. Total 51 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
