1888 N338-2 S. F. Hess Pat Fitzgerald SGC NM+ 86 - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,880.00
Graded NM+ 86 by SGC. This is the highest-graded of all S. F. Hess cards to date by any of the third-party grading companies (PSA, SGC, or GAI). Extraordinary N332 S. F. Hess “Athletes and Celebrities” sample card of champion walker Pat Fitzgerald. The cataloguing of this set has always been a little confusing, as a case can be made that the S. F. Hess boxers and other athletes (such as champion walker Pat Fitzgerald) are a part of the same set as the N338-2 baseball players, the N332 S. F. Hess Boxers series, and/or the S. F. Hess N330 series, which is identified as featuring athletes, boxers, and actors of the era. All of the S. F. Hess cards featuring athletes are particularly rare. Patrick Fitzgerald was extremely prominent athlete in the 1880s. He is also featured in the 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions set and the 1889 N28 Allen & Ginter series. This card is in extraordinary high grade, with just the slightest hint of corner wear (the corners are still strong and square), and a perfectly clean front and back. This is an extraordinary high-grade nineteenth-century sample card from one of tobacco-card collecting’s rarest issues. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,880.00
