Autographed "Hand Painted" Boxing Glove Collection with Ali, Frazier and Schmeling (7)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,762.50
Unique collection of seven signed boxing gloves, each featuring an original oil painting of the respective signer by noted sports artist Wayne Prokopiak. All of the gloves have been individually signed, with the exception of one, and feature the signatures of boxing legends Muhammad Ali (inscribed "To Joe, Muhammad Ali, 6-10-90"), Joe Frazier, Max Schmeling, Marvin Hagler (signed "Marvelous Marvin Hagler"), Archie Moore (dated "92"), Ken Norton, and Carmen Basilio (also featuring the portrait of, and signed by, trainer Angelo Dundee). Wayne Prokopiak, who has created many memorable sports lithographs, is best known today for his work with the Boxing Hall of Fame. Prokopiak was the official artist for the Hall during the 1990s and was annually commissioned to create the cover illustrations for its Hall of Fame induction programs. All of the paintings on these gloves were produced between the years 1991 and 1993 and each has been signed and dated by Prokopiak. It is not known how many of these "portrait" gloves were created by Prokopiak; however, they are certainly few in number, for these are the first examples we have ever seen. The fact that Prokopiak was the official artist of the Boxing Hall of Fame gives these signed artworks an added dimension of significance. The gloves, all red Everlast boxing gloves, are in Near Mint condition overall. An exceptional signed boxing glove collection and one that would display beautifully in either home or office. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
