1959 Harlem Globetrotters Team-Signed Program with Wilt Chamberlain
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $470.00
This 1959 Harlem Globetrotters program dates to Wilt Chamberlain’s only season with the club and has been signed on the cover by Chamberlain and six other members of the Globetrotters: Meadow Lark Lemon, Clarence Wilson, Tex Harrison, Millard Harris, Roman Turmon, and Herman Taylor. Also displayed on the cover are the signatures of four members of the Los Angeles Rams, the opponents of the Globetrotters on this day. The back cover displays the signatures of professional table tennis players Richard Bergmann and Norakuzu Fuji (their World Championship match was the half-time entertainment). All of the signatures have been scripted in blue ink and grade “9/10,” with the exception of Harrison (pencil, “8”). Included in the twenty-four page program are photos and short biographies of the Globetrotter team members including Chamberlain. A two-time First Team All-American at Kansas, Chamberlain left college in 1958 following his junior season. Stating at the time that he wanted to be paid if he was going to be double- and triple-teamed every night, Chamberlain decided to join the Globetrotters for a year while he waited to be eligible for the NBA draft (college players couldn’t sign NBA contracts until after their class graduated). As a novelty, the seven foot-one Chamberlain played point guard for the Globetrotters. The following year he signed with the Philadelphia Warriors, and quickly established himself as the top player in the NBA. This signed program is a very rare and fascinating relic from the dawn of the professional career of basketball's greatest legend. Chamberlain retired in 1973 as the NBA record holder in many important categories including most points scored in one game (100). Today he is widely recognized as one of greatest players in basketball history. The program (7.75 x 10.5 inches) displays light handling wear and is in Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $470.00
