1997 Tiger Woods PGA "Player of the Year" Award Ring
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $3,818.75
This original PGA ring, manufactured by Jenkins, is made of 10K gold and displays a yellow stone on top bearing the letters "PGA." The phrase "Player of the Year Award" is lettered in raised relief along the perimeter of the stone. Each shank displays the PGA logo, with the right shank also bearing the engraved name "T. Woods," and the left shank the engraved year "1997." We would normally assume that this is a salesman's sample ring, but the ring is accompanied by a letter from Ringsport Collections specifically defining this ring as not a salesman's sample, but as a backup ring manufactured by Jenkins in the event that ring to be presented to Tiger Woods should be lost or damaged. We have no way to verify that there are only two examples in the world of this ring (as stated in the accompanying letter) but at the very least it is the equivalent in appearance and spirit to a salesman's sample ring, though in this case it may possibly a unique alternate ring. Salesman's sample rings are very popular with collectors when available, and represent a relatively affordable alternative to the virtually identical rings owned by the recipients, which would be many times more expensive if available. We don't think Tiger Woods is likely to part with his personal PGA Player of the Year ring in the near future (you know how he is about these things), so this ring is almost certainly the closest option that will ever be available. Tigers Woods made history in 1997 by not only becoming the youngest player in history to win The Masters (at age twenty-one), but winning it by a record twelve strokes. He went on to win three more PGA events that year and finished the season as the leading money winner on the PGA tour. Those accomplishments later earned him his first of three consecutive PGA Player of the Year Awards. This is both a rare and attractive Tiger Woods ring commemorating his first full season on the PGA tour. In Excellent to Mint condition. Size: Approximately 10. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
