Circa 1954 Jacqueline Kennedy ALS
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $587.50
Four-page circa 1954 handwritten letter, undated, signed by Jacqueline Kennedy (1929-94), former First Lady and wife of President John F. Kennedy, written very shortly after her marriage to John F. Kennedy, and with significant content specifically referencing Jack, her marriage, and the car that she bought for JFK as a wedding present. The letter, dated “Sept 3,” is penned in blue ink on “Hammersmith Farm Newport, Rhode Island” letterhead and concerns her dilemma regarding stocks she once owned. Addressed “Dear Tom,” the letter reads in full: “My stepfather had his firm Auchincloss, Parker + Redpath in Washington, D.C. invest about $3,500 for me several years ago – before I was married – in these 2 funds. Then I sold the stock and reinvested it in Boeing Aircraft, which as you remember, I sold to buy Jack that car. So now I have no money invested in anything. These inefficient funds continue to send me little checks for $1.14 or 89 cents every few months, though I haven’t had my money with them for years. It is just a nuisance – I spoke to my stepfather about it - + he had his office send me these letters – which are so complicated that I haven’t done anything about them since January. I don’t have any certificates – I did not realize what they were – and threw them away as they came in – though you had better not tell the funds that. Perhaps you could settle this once and for all – just tell them to cross me off their list. I don’t see why I need new certificates if I no longer own stock. – If this will take up too much valuable time just skip it – but would you let me know what you decide to do. Thank you. – Jackie.” Both the text and signature are boldly scripted and grade “10.” Jacqueline Kennedy’s stepfather was Hugh D. Auchincloss and this letter was written from his estate in Newport, Rhode Island. Hammersmith Farm was also the venue for the wedding of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy on September 12, 1953. The car she bought for “Jack” with the proceeds of the Boeing stock, as mentioned in her letter, refers to the car she bought him as a wedding gift. The letter (5.25 x 6.75 inches, unfolded), which is written on four sides of a fold-over sheet, bears two notebook holes along the top and a horizontal mailing fold. Otherwise, it remains in Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $587.50
