1960 Marilyn Monroe Signed Check

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,175.00

Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., business check, dated February 6, 1960, signed by Marilyn Monroe. The check, drawn on the Colonial Trust Company of New York, is made out to “MCA Artists, Ltd.,” in the amount of $714.62 and is signed “Marilyn Monroe” in blue ink (grading “9”) along the base. A blue ink notation (not in Monroe’s hand) in the upper left corner reads “Transportation NY-LA 11/2/59.” Marilyn Monroe was finishing up production on the musical Let’s Make Love in February 1960 . In July of that year she began filming The Misfits , which was written specifically as a starring vehicle for her by her husband Arthur Miller. The film also starred Hollywood legend Clark Gable. Unfortunately, it marked the last film for both of them. Gable died of a heart attack just days after the final scenes were filmed. Monroe, who had begun filming another picture in 1962 ( Something’s Got To Give ), mysteriously died in August of that year at the age of thirty-six. Only a very limited number of Marilyn Monroe checks exist. Almost all have surfaced approximately eight years ago and this small supply has practically vanished into collections. Marilyn Monroe is one of the most forged of all celebrity signatures, giving these checks all the more special significance to collectors. This is an ideal Marilyn Monroe Productions check example signed by America’s most enduring sex symbol. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation marks, as well as a staple hole in the upper left. In Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
