1955 Elvis Presley Signed Sun Records Publicity Photo
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,997.50
Extraordinary 8 x 10-inch black-and-white publicity photo of Elvis Presley dating from 1955, signed and inscribed in black ink in the upper right “Best of everything – To Sarah from Elvis Presley.” This is a particularly significant and extremely early signed Elvis photograph. This was the very first publicity photo of Elvis issued by Sun Records in 1955. There is some very minor bleeding to Presley’s signature; otherwise both the inscription and signature grade “9/10.” While other signed examples of this photo are known, it is very uncommon to find a personalized inscription. According to world-renowned Elvis memorabilia expert Rich Consolo, signed examples of this photo normally display just a very short salutation, such as "Yours, Elvis Presley." The fact that Elvis took the time to personalize this photo is very rare and desirable, and suggests that Elvis must have known the recipient very well. Elvis was discovered in 1954 by Sam Phillips, one of the owners of Sun Records. By 1955 Elvis had recorded five songs for Sun Records and was starting to make a name for himself down South. This is the very photo Sun Records chose to promote their newest star, and it is our understanding that these prints were made specifically for Elvis to sign for fans. This is an outstanding example of one of the most highly prized of all early signed Elvis items, with a special historical significance to the earliest days of his career. The photograph displays a number of minor creases and is in Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,997.50
