Circa 1902 National Biscuit Company Tableware Collection Including 5 Chocolate Slag Glasses (17)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,410.00

Collection of scarce National Biscuit Company glasses and china bowl measuring cups dating from the turn of the century. The rarest and most highly sought after items in the collection are five identical chocolate slag glasses manufactured by the Greentown Glass Company. The side of each glass is lettered "Uneeda Milk Biscuit" in raised relief, while "National Biscuit Company" is lettered on the bottom of each glass, also in raised relief. These glasses were produced for only a very short period of time prior to the destruction of the company's factory in 1903. Each glass stands six inches in height; all are in Excellent to Mint condition. Also included here are eight china measuring cups dating from circa 1902. These cups were originally packaged by the company in large baskets of loose crackers and cookies that were shipped to the local grocers. The grocer used the cups, which usually measured one dry pint, to mete out the product to consumers. After the basket was empty, he could keep the bowl, sell it, or give it away to a favored customer. The bowls were usually decorated with images of the "Uneeda Boy," or the "Uneeda Girl," but were also produced with slogans. Because they were only available to merchants, they remain quite scarce today. The eight examples offered here are comprised of five (slightly varying sizes) decorated with the "Uneeda Boy," two (of slightly varying sizes) decorated with the "Uneeda Girl," and one bearing the slogan "A Bowl Full of Goodness - Baked by National Biscuit Company." One of the "Uneeda Girl" bowls and one the "Uneeda Boy" bowls has very minor chips along the rim. All of the illustrated images on the bowls display moderate wear. The bowls range between three and four inches in height and are in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. The remaining items in the collection are two "Cream of Wheat" cereal bowls (one of which has a repaired chip along the rim, otherwise Ex), a National Biscuit Company glass tumbler (5.5 inches in height, Ex-Mt), and a Uneeda Whiskey shot glass (Ex-Mt). Total: 17 pieces (5 chocolate slag glasses, 8 china measuring cups, 2 Cream of Wheat bowls, 1 glass, and 1 whiskey glass). Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,410.00
