Circa 1890 American Biscuit Company Stereoscope and Stereoscope Cards

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $352.50

Miniature stereoscope and fifty-six accompanying stereograph cards issued as a promotion by the American Biscuit Co. of San Francisco, California. A stereograph card features two identical photos mounted side-by-side that, when viewed through a stereoscope, merge and appear to present a single three-dimensional image. This is a very rare and unusual advertising premium from an era when viewing images in this manner was a great novelty. Stereoscopes were extremely popular during the late nineteenth century. The American Biscuit Co. was one of many regional baking companies later purchased by the National Biscuit Company in the early 1900s. The small metal stereoscope (4.25L x 3D x 1.25H inches) is lettered "Compliments of American Biscuit Co., San Francisco, Cal." on the top and features advertising for the company on the base. Accompanying the viewer are fifty-six small stereograph cards, each reading "Compliments of American Biscuit Co. San Francisco, Cal." in the center. The photos capture a wide range of subjects, including both indoor and outdoor scenes. The metal viewer displays very light wear and is in exceptionally fine Very Good to Excellent condition. The cards (2.75 x 1 inches) range in grade from Good to Excellent, averaging Very Good. Total: 57 items (one stereoscope and fifty-six stereograph cards). Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $352.50
