Turn-of-the-Century "Shredded Wheat" Trunk and Other Product Packages (14 Items)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $587.50
Collection of early bakery related collectibles is highlighted by a magnificent turn-of-the-century wooden trunk that once housed thirty-six cartons of Shredded Wheat. Printing is featured on both ends of the trunk, including the company name "The Shredded Wheat Co. - Niagara Falls, N. Y." The trunk (26 L x 16 D x 19.5 H inches) is designed with a hinged lid, with metal clasp on the front, and displays wear commensurate with its age and former use. The lettering remains bold and legible. In Very Good condition overall. This trunk has a classic old-time "country store look" that is fascinating to all who see it. This is an extremely decorative antique and one that would be ideal for use or display in either home or office. Included with the trunk are a number of scarce product containers, some dating from approximately the same time period. 1) Circa 1920s National Biscuit Company "Log Cabin Brownies" cookie box, designed in the shape of a log cabin (3.5 x 3 x 3 inches). Complete with its original carrying string. Ex-Mt. We can't imagine too many of these fragile boxes survived in this condition. 2) Circa 1920s National Biscuit Company "Alphabets" cookie box (2.75 x 2.75 x 2.75 inches). Ex, with some tape repair to a side panel. 3) Circa 1920s National Biscuit Company "Animal Crackers" cookie box (5 x 2 x 3 inches). Only remnants of the original carrying string remain. Vg. 4) Circa 1920s "Mother Goose Cookies" box (2.5 x .5 x 5 inches). Vg. 5) Circa 1906 G. H. Bent & Co. "Cold Water Crackers" metal tin (8 x 4.75 x 4.5 inches). Gd-Vg. 6) Circa 1900 Holmes & Coutts "Rip Van Winkle" biscuit tin (9.75 x 3.75 x 3 inches). Colorful tin features illustrated vignettes from the Washington Irving tale "Rip Van Winkle." Gd-Vg. 7) Circa 1920s Ontario Biscuit Company "Dairy Made Crackers" tin (circular, 6 inches in diameter, 8 inches high). Vg-Ex. 8-13) Six unopened cans of "Cream of Wheat." Two of the cans (circular, 4.25 in diameter, 5.5 inches high) date from the late 1920s, while the other four (3.25 in diameter, 5.5 inches high) date from the 1970s. Though representing two completely different eras, all of these tins are remarkable in that they are sealed and completely unopened. Ex overall. Please note: due to the size and/or weight of this collection, the shipping charges for this lot (depending on where it is sent and method of shipping) may be substantial. Total: 14 items (1 trunk and 13 packages/tins). Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $587.50
