1985-1987 Helen Frankenthaler Limited-Edition Signed Lithograph
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,115.00
Limited-edition lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler (1928 - ), a leading exponent of the abstract expressionist school. The untitled work is hand numbered "47/54" in the lower left corner and has been signed and dated ("Helen Frankenthaler '85-'87") in pencil along the lower right. At the start of her career Frankenthaler was heavily influenced by Jackson Pollock, with whom she studied, but she soon developed a style all her own. In the 1950s she developed a novel technique of painting known as "soak stain." The process consisted of her pouring paint over an unprepared surface and allowing it to soak into the canvas. The canvas, in turn, became a part of the artwork as opposed to a surface upon which the artwork was produced. This technique led to a new movement in art called Color Field Painting. Today, Frankenthaler is considered by many to be among the most important and influential female artists of the twentieth century. The lithograph measures 38 x 30 inches and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 44 x 35 inches.
