1909 T204 Ramly Cigarettes Complete Set (121)

Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $52,875.00

Ramlys are universally regarded as one of the most classic and elegantly designed baseball-card issues ever produced. Issued in 1909 and catalogued T204 in the American Card Catalog , Ramlys are noted for the distinctive fancy gold-embossed borders that surround the oval photographic portraits. They are much rarer than most other tobacco-card issues from the 1910 era. Presented is a very attractive almost-never seen complete set of this important issue, one of only several sets over the past thirty-five years that we have ever had the privilege of offering in complete-set form. The Ramly set is highlighted by fifteen Hall of Famers, including Walter Johnson, Ed Plank, and Jesse Burkett. This is a beautiful set, assembled many years ago, with cards ranging the entire spectrum of grades. We have selected thirty-six cards (30% of the set) to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. The SGC grades are as follows: Eight EX/NM 80: Chance (HOF), Dunn, Ewing, McAleer, Mitchell, Street, Thomas, and Tinker (HOF). Six EX+ 70: Brown (HOF), Hemphill, Manning, Rucker, Schekard, and Stahl. Two EX 60: Freeman and Sebring. Seven VG/EX 50: Fromme, Graham, Jones, Moran, Newton, Nichols, and Smith. Eight VG 40: Bender (HOF), Burchell, Burkett (HOF), E. Collins (HOF), J. Collins (HOF), Huggins (HOF), Keeler (HOF), and Plank (HOF). Three GOOD 30: Cicotte ("Black Sox," It is interesting to note that Cicotte's name is misspelled as "Cicolte" on this card), Griffith (HOF), and Wallace (HOF). One FAIR 20: Shipke. One POOR 10: Johnson (HOF). The Bresnahan and Evers were both rejected for grading by SGC for "questionable color," otherwise both are in Gd condition. Ungraded Cards: Two Ex: Donovan and Dorner. Thirty-Three Vg to Vg-Ex: Blair, Bransfield, Carrigan, Coakley, Criger, Davis, Devlin, Donahue, Donlin, Elberfield, Ganley, Gessler, Hartzell, Hummell, Lindaman, Lush, McConnell, McCormick, McLean, Merkle, Milan, Murphy, Murray, Niles, Paskert, Pfeister, Reilly, Schaefer, Schulte, Steinfeldt, Sweeney, Tenney, and Wagner. Twelve Gd-Vg: Arrelanes, Bancroft (T.T.T. Cigarettes back), Beebe, Byrnes, Howard, Lobert, Lumley, Murnane, O'Hare, O'Leary, Raymond, and Schlei. Twenty-Three Gd: Anderson (rare blank-backed variety), J. Ball, N. Ball, Bates, Bell, Blankenship, Bridwell, Clymer, Coombs, Crandall, Dineen, Howell, Kahoe, Karger, Konetchey, Lord, McIntyre, Powell, Ritchey, Ruelbach, Spencer, Stephens, and Unglaub. Seven Fr-Gd: Alperman, Archer, Ferguson, Ferris, Hoblitzel (T.T.T. Cigarettes back, with a small amount of scrapbook paper on reverse), Morgan, and Sallee. Six Pr: Bowerman (trimmed), Chech, Conroy, Kleinow, Knight, and Pelty. Backs almost all Ramly Cigarettes, but also included are two examples of the rare T.T.T. Cigarettes (Bancroft and Hoblitzel). This is a set with tremendous eye-appeal, with many condition highlights, and appearing at a glance considerably stronger than suggested by the very respectable and accurate condition composite and individual grades listed above. This is a very rarely offered complete set of one of card collecting’s most exciting and classic tobacco issues. Total 121 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000+. SOLD FOR $52,875.00
