1932 R114 U.S. Caramel "Presidents" Complete Set with McKinley! (31)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $22,325.00

Extremely rare complete set of thirty-one cards featuring Presidents of the United States, including the ultra rare William McKinley, which is one of only three examples known to exist and one of the great prizes of all nonsport card rarities. This is a very clean mid-grade set, with twenty-three cards grading Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex, six cards Vg, and only two cards in lesser grades (including McKinley which has been downgraded due to a factory cancel hole-punch in the lower right corner to ensure that this card could not be redeemed again, otherwise the McKinley is in a very appealing Vg condition). The vast majority of cards in the set have been downgraded from Excellent to the Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex range primarily due to corner wear. Thirty of the cards (including McKinley) have a "canceled" ink stamp on the back along the bottom border. The grades presented in the set composite above are without reference to the "canceled" ink stamp on the reverses. This U.S. Caramel "Presidents" set is considered by most collectors to be complete at thirty cards. There was, of course, a thirty-first card issued, that being legendary rarity President William McKinley, but this card was intentionally distributed in very short supply. The reverse of each card informs youngsters that if they collected the entire series of thirty-one cards, the set could be redeemed for a one-pound box of assorted chocolates. By making McKinley incredibly rare on purpose, U.S. Caramel saved themselves the expense of giving away pounds and pounds of free chocolates, and at the same time may have even encouraged extra sales, as youngsters kept buying pack after pack in a futile attempt to complete their sets. This was not the only time U.S. Caramel played this dirty trick on the youth of America! The Lindy Lindstrom card in the 1932 R328 US Caramel "Famous Athletes" set also owes its incredible rarity to this very same practice. Today only three Lindy Lindstrom cards are known to exist, and to the best of our knowledge, also only three examples of President William McKinley (including the one offered in this set) are known. (Catalog addendum note: We have received an email from a very knowledgeable non-sport card scholar who informs us that he knows of the existence of two other examples of the rare McKinley card. We have no reason to doubt this information. With great card rarities that are not unique, it is always possible that other examples exist that we are not aware of.) In 1992, The Sport Americana Price Guide to Non-Sport Cards noted that at that time the McKinley card "has never been confirmed in any collection." The McKinley card offered in this set was the very first example of this legendary rarity to ever be discovered and documented. This is the very same card that was featured in Non-Sport Update Magazine to prove to the world that the card actually did, in fact, exist (a copy of this article accompanies). The "President" set is actually rarer than the popular R328 U.S. Caramel "Famous Athletes" series, and this is the first McKinley card (and complete set) that we have ever had the privilege of offering. Total 31 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $22,325.00
