Circa 1910 H-UNC Piedmont Tobacco "Countries of the World" Complete Set (10)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,292.50

There's rare, and then there's rare. These are rare. Presented is a complete set of ten circa 1910 Piedmont tobacco premiums entitled "Countries of the World," featuring extraordinary and colorful artwork of people from different countries experiencing the joys of smoking. We've never seen even a sample card from this set before. It is possible that Jefferson Burdick did not as well, as we were unable to find this set catalogued in the American Card Catalog or anywhere else. Each card features a detailed lithographic scene relating to the culture of the country represented, with two subjects smoking, one an "old-fashioned" pipe and one a "modern" cigarette, and with a large package of Piedmont Cigarettes superimposed in the foreground of the illustration. The reverses provide educational information about each country, with a special emphasis on the role of tobacco and smoking to industry and culture. The production quality of this set is extremely impressive. This is one of the most substantial, as well as elusive, of all 1910-era tobacco issues. The condition of this set averages Vg-Ex to Excellent overall. Dimensions: 8 x 5.5 inches each. Total 10 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
