1930s to 1940s Non-Sports "Shoebox" Card Collection (255)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,115.00
Very unusual "shoebox" collection of 255 non-sport cards from the 1930s and 1940s, with representation from five different scarce issues including three complete sets. 1) 1934 R78 World Wide Gum "Jungle Gum" (11 cards): #29, 31, 33, 39, 41, 43, 47, 49, 57, 63, and 67. The companies original projection of a 192-card set never came to be; only forty-eight titles were printed. Cards 1-24 were issued in numerical sequence, but the company resorted to skip-numbering the final twenty-four cards to promote sales. The animal images used on the cards were copied directly from the Hassan Cigarette "Animal Series" of 1910. 2) 1936 R61 M. Pressner & Co. "Government Agents vs. Public Enemies" complete 24-card set (numbered A201-A224). The exceptionally colorful graphics and popular subject matter of this strip-card issue make it one of the all-time classics of non-sport card collecting. 3) 1930s R133 "Series of 96 - Movie Stars" complete 96-card set (numbered 101-196). This anonymous strip-card series features many of the great movie stars of the day. The cards are numbered from 101 to 196 and are arranged in specific subgroups including child stars, female stars, cowboy stars, and male stars. These cards were issued in strips of eight cards. Includes Shirley Temple, Jackie Cooper, Mickey Rooney, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, John Wayne, Tom Mix, Stan Laurel, W.C. Fields, Cary Grant, Bing Crosby, Oliver Hardy, Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper, Will Rogers, Clark Gable, Boris Karloff, and many more. 4) 1930s R150 "Time Marches On" complete 48-card set (numbered 601-648). This anonymous strip-card series illustrates important events in the history of the United States, from the time of Columbus to the presidency of F.D.R. The front of the cards have color artwork sketches with the card number and set title along the top and the caption below. 5) 1940s Peerless Weighing & Vending Machine Corp. "Movie Stars" (76 cards). Issued in coin-operated weight machines each card is printed on thick cardboard stock and measures 1-1/8 x 2-1/8 inches. The front features the star's name along with studio name. The reverse is marked "Collect Engrav-o-tints/Portraits Of Movie Stars" along with fortune. Cards are sometimes found with weight ink-stamp imprint on reverse. Stars include Gene Autry, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Henry Fonda, Lana Turner, Betty Grable, Mickey Rooney, Tyrone Power, and many more (a complete list is available by fax). The cards in this collection range in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt condition (twenty-six cards have minor paper loss on the reverse), averaging Ex overall. Total 255 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
