1951 Bowman "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" Original Card Artwork #148
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $705.00
1951 Bowman "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" extended series original watercolor artwork for card #148, entitled "The Ultimatum," from one of non sport-card collecting's most popular sets. When Bowman issued the "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" set in 1951, a total 108 cards were actually printed and released, but 180 cards were originally planned for the set. Unfortunately the artwork for cards #109 to 144 was mysteriously lost and the production of the set was stopped. Many years later the artwork produced in 1951 for cards #145 to 180 (which was never lost) was discovered in the Bowman archives, purchased by collectors, and eventually issued as cards in the early 1980s. Presented is the original artwork for card #148 from this last series. The artwork is extraordinary, with vibrant colors, and includes additional image area which was cropped out on the issued card. From the text on the back of the card we learn that while "the gorillas' life is primitive in many respects because they prefer it that way," this card features the leader of the smart gorillas displaying his "considerable scientific knowledge" by taking off in "an aereal spinner drome built on top of the treetops in order to deliver an ultimatum" to his enemies. Of course! Why do we even need the text! The artwork is in Near Mint condition. The artwork is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Dimensions: 7.5 x 6.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $705.00
