1951 Bowman "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" Original Card Artwork #172
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $587.50
1951 Bowman "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" extended series original watercolor artwork for card #172, entitled "Mining by Ray Drills," from one of non-sport card collecting's most popular sets. When Bowman issued the "Jets, Rockets, Spacemen" set in 1951, a total 108 cards were actually printed and released, but 180 cards were originally planned for the set. The balance of the set (cards 109-180) was not issued by Bowman because the artworks for cards #109 to 144 were mysteriously lost and the production of the set was stopped. Many years later the artwork produced in 1951 for cards #145 to 180 (which was never lost) was discovered in the Bowman archives, purchased by collectors, and eventually issued as cards in the early 1980s. Offered is the original 1951 Bowman artwork, direct from the Bowman archives, for card #172 from this last series. The artwork is extremely detailed, with brilliant colors, and includes additional image area which was cropped out on the issued card. This card features intergalactic miners drilling for diamonds on one of Jupiter's moons, armed with special ray gun drills. The artwork is in Near Mint condition. The artwork is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Dimensions: 7.5 x 6.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $587.50
