1909-1911 T206 Cy Young Portrait - Sovereign Back

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Every player has his classic card and for Cy Young, to many, it is his T206 portrait set against a dark green background. It is one of the most recognizable of all vintage cards and one of the most popular cards in the entire T206 set. In addition to being in very high grade, the offered example is all the more noteworthy as the reverse has an advertisement for Sovereign Cigarettes. Sovereign backs are unusual and very scarce, though not in the same league as the rarest of T206 backs (such as Lennox, Uzit, or Drum). This card has very strong eye appeal. The colors are bright and Young’s image is perfectly focused. The unusual as-printed green background with yellow accents gives this card a particularly striking and distinctive appearance. The centering is perfect and all four corners are square with a touch of wear. We have little doubt that if it had just the slightest hint less wear to the upper left corner that this card would have been graded EX-MT by SGC. The reverse is perfectly clean with bold green print against an off-white background. A very interesting rare-back variety of this classic Cy Young card. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
