1910 T206 and 1933 R338 Goudey Sport King Ty Cobb Cards (2)

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,057.50

Two classic prewar cards of Ty Cobb: 1) 1909-1911 T206 Red Background. The red-background card is one of the most popular of all Ty Cobb cards. This is a very clean example with a flawless portrait, even corner wear, and no creases. Piedmont reverse. Solid Vg-Ex card appropriately downgraded to approximately Gd due to the slightest strip of surface paper loss along part of the top border (not easily seen) and a hint of a tape mark (possibly from a stamp hinge) at the top of the reverse (also extremely minor). 2) 1933 R338 Sport Kings #1. The Sport Kings is one of Cobb’s most popular and majestic cards. Being the number one card in the set, this card naturally gravitated to the top of the stack, exposing it to extra wear and handling, and thus making high-grade examples even more difficult to find than most other Sport Kings and other Cobb cards. Bright and clean, both front and back, beautifully centered, with crisp, bold colors, and no creases. Appears Vg-Ex from the front, but technically grades Gd due to a very light strip of discoloration (possibly from glue residue) along the top bottom on the reverse. These are especially interesting cards with reference to the value they represent, as the extremely minor flaws hardly affect their appearance (please, see scans of reverses online!) yet affect their technical grades (and hence value) significantly. Two very attractive Ty Cobb cards, one dating from his playing days, the other issued after his Hall of Famer career. Total 2 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
