1909-1911 T206 Ty Cobb Rare "UZIT" Back PSA EX-MT 6 - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $29,375.00
Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Highest graded example! Presented is one of tobacco card collecting's great treasures: The T206 Ty Cobb with the extremely rare UZIT back. The bat-off-shoulder pose is the only T206 Cobb pose that was produced with advertising for UZIT cigarettes on the back. Few UZIT cards of any players are known in such high grade, let alone featuring Hall of Famers. In the 2006 REA UZIT find, for example, the very best of the thirty-three T206 cards with UZIT backs was in Vg-Ex condition. The fact that this T206 Ty Cobb card is in such high grade, and is the most desirable T206 card that could possibly exist with a UZIT back, makes this card an astonishing rarity that is noteworthy to even the most advanced T206 collectors and scholars. The UZIT Cobb is universally recognized as one of the best front and rare-back combinations that can possibly exist in the entire T206 set. Very few examples are known. We have been able to verify with certainty the existence of exactly four examples, though perhaps another one or two are held in very private collections. Whatever the exact number of UZIT Cobbs in existence, and it may very well be four, it is interesting to note that the UZIT Cobb is considerably rarer than the famous T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb Tobacco advertising on the reverse, of which approximately twelve examples are known.
The T206 set is unique in that it offers so many dimensions of interest and intrigue to collectors, and is a fascinating field of collecting and study unto itself. It is the single most popular vintage-card issue among collectors. Some of the many elements and topics relating to the T206 set that fascinate collectors include: the many color variations, rare cards, scarce cards, team variations, Wagner, Plank, Doyle, Magie, printer's scraps, miscuts, Cobb with Cobb back cards, Southern Leaguers, great stars, great artwork, great era, Hall of Famers, and, of course, rare backs. Interest in T206s is never going out of style, and one of the "dream cards" that is recognized by all is a high-grade T206 Ty Cobb with a UZIT back. There is only one PSA EX-MT 6 example. This is it.
This card has been well known for many years. It has quietly changed hands several times over the years but has never been offered at auction. The evaluating of dream combinations of T206 fronts and backs, like the valuing of any card, is an art. There is no right answer. Whatever its value, the UZIT Cobb in general, and this UZIT Cobb in particular, will always be one of the ultimate desirable rarities of the T206 set. The card is bright and clean, with light, even wear to the corners, extremely bright and vibrant colors, and no creases. The perfect centering is also particularly striking. This is a beautiful card. Extremely close examination of the reverse reveals a very small and faint hint of a blemish in the upper right corner and the slightest hint of shadow toning in the lower corners, almost certainly relating to the card's being stored long ago in an old-fashioned album with "corners" in the 1930s or 1940s, long before plastic sheets or slabs were invented. This is consistent with the card's stellar condition. This card was obviously very well cared for to have survived in such extraordinary condition, and it probably was saved by a very serious collector in the earliest days of organized collecting, when the most advanced collectors began to use albums with paper "corners" to properly store and preserve their cards instead of pasting their cards into albums. This is a simply outstanding high-grade example one of the most significant of all tobacco card rarities, and the premier T206 rare-back card. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $29,375.00
