Circa 1910 Honus Wagner Freeman Cigar Co. Advertising Envelope
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $1,175.00
This extremely rare (very possibly unique) circa 1910 Freeman Cigar Company preaddressed advertising envelope cover features a portrait of Honus Wagner. This envelope is an incredible find, with a direct connection to both the legend of the T206 Wagner, and to the rare cigar labels and cigar bands related to Honus Wagner Cigars. The portrait on this envelope features the same image of Wagner as appears on both his famous T206 card and the colorful Honus Wagner cigar labels. "Hans Wagner" is identified across his chest. While we do not believe the Honus Wagner cigar labels and cigar bands featuring Wagner's image were ever issued to the public, it is clear that there were at the very least plans to do so. Interestingly, the larger interior Honus Wagner cigar box labels feature advertising for the Freeman Cigar Company, the very same company that produced this advertising envelope. The envelope with stamp already affixed was sent as an enclosure by Freeman's Cigar Company for return to them, most likely with an invoice or ordering form. This advertising envelope is an exciting and very significant addition to the small universe of items relating to the legend of Honus Wagner and his association with tobacco. The envelope is missing a small piece in the lower right corner (probably torn when the larger envelope in which it was enclosed was opened) and a small round water or coffee stain at top, otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition. Dimensions: 6 x 3.5 inches. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
