1890 N172 Old Judge Buck Ewing/Mascot, New York (Players League)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Presented is one of the rarest of all N172 Old Judges: the 1890 Players League designation card featuring Buck Ewing and the mascot with New York of the short-lived Players League. This is one of only several examples of this significant rarity known. The fact that Buck Ewing was one of the great stars of the Players League, who led the New York franchise as both star player and manager, makes this card all the more noteworthy. All 1890 Players League cards are extremely rare. Buck Ewing is one of only several Hall of Famers in the 1890 Old Judge “Players League” subset. This is the first example of this card we have ever seen, and we believe this is also the only example ever graded. (Because the PSA and SGC population reports do not provide pose and team detail, it is impossible for us to be certain that another example has not been graded, but we have never seen or heard of another.) The image quality on 1890 Old Judges is almost always a little weak. The photo quality on this example is reasonably strong and above average for an 1890 Old Judge. The card has evenly rounded corners, with some surface chipping in the lower right and left corners. The image area is perfectly clean. The reverse has a light hint of glue staining, which is not unusual for Old Judges. When the Players League folded after a single season, Ewing returned to New York of the National League in 1891. The 1890 New York, Players League designation card of Buck Ewing is one of the great team-change rarities of the entire Old Judge set. This is a very significant card of one of nineteenth-century baseball’s most celebrated stars, featuring him with New York of the Players League. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
