1911 T5 Pinkerton Tobacco Cabinets (2) Including Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $4,700.00
Two 1911 T5 Pinkerton cabinet cards, both Hall of Famers, comprise this lot: #170 Ty Cobb and #501 “Chief” Bender. T5 Pinkertons are among the rarest of all 1910-era tobacco issues. These cabinet cards were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with cigarettes produced by the Pinkerton Tobacco Co. Each T5 premium card (3-3/8 x 5-1/2 inches) when issued was designed with a real photo attached along the top of the reverse onto a thick cardboard cabinet-style mount (4.75 x 7.75 inches) with a surrounding embossed decorative imprint. The Ty Cobb Pinkerton photograph has been neatly removed from the mount with virtually no back damage, just a hint of remnant from glue along a thin strip at the top of the blank reverse. The card has a light moisture stain along the very top, but is otherwise in about Excellent condition. The mount on the Bender Pinkerton is present but has long ago snapped into two pieces, separated along a horizontal break above the real photo, and has been reattached on the reverse with clear tape. The two pieces fit together perfectly and the card has a complete appearance as is. A restorer could permanently reassemble if desired. The Bender photograph has long ago been glued down to the mount (when originally issued, the photo was only glued to the mount along the top of the photo). The Ty Cobb is especially noteworthy, both as one of Cobb’s rarest cards and as one of the major keys of this exclusive 1911 production. The Cobb could easily be placed on an original T5 Pinkerton mount, which, while it would not truly be an original as-issued cabinet, would be the next best thing, would present beautifully, and be far more economical than a T5 Pinkerton Ty Cobb on its original as-issued mount. Two key Hall of Famers, each with condition problems but each with great merit as is, from one of the rarest tobacco issues of the 1910 era. Total 2 cards.
Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
