1911 T205 Gold Border Addie Joss Memorial Card

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $4,700.00

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Perfectly centered example of Addie Joss. Bright, crisp, and clean, with brilliant colors, perfect registration, displaying four square corners with just the slightest hint of wear keeping this card from an even higher grade. The reverse of the card is also perfectly clean, with bold blue text, and without even a hint of tobacco staining. This is a stunning card and in an extremely high grade for a T205 Joss. Only five examples have ever been graded higher (four PSA 6 and one PSA 7). Joss is a particularly significant card in T205 because he is both a key Hall of Famer and also one of the rarest cards in the set. This is an even more significant card than most collectors realize, as the T205 of Joss is actually a memorial card. Joss tragically passed away from meningitis on April 14, 1911, cutting short one of baseball's greatest careers. Few collectors realize that the text on the reverse of the card specifically refers to his death in 1911 as a "great loss to the game," closing with "He was a faithful player liked by his team mates and respected by the public, many thousands of whom attended his funeral." Note: The catalog description title refers to this card as a "memorial card" simply to call attention to this distinction. All Addie Joss T205s have the same text on the reverse. This is a very sharp high-grade T205, and an extraordinary example of one of the most important and desirable cards ever issued of legendary Hall of Famer Addie Joss. We think the current SMR price of $700 is extremely low on this card. Reserve $400. Estimate $700+++. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
